8th Grade Health

What will we be learning?
 
1st Quarter - Exercise Science- In this unit we will explore the 5 components of health and how mental, physical and emotional health are connected. We will also see how we can improve our fitnessgram scores to improve all aspects of our health by developing a personalized fitness plan.
 
2nd Quarter - Drug Education- We will be educated about many different drugs. By the end of this unit, students will be able to understand/explain the effects of individual drugs on both personal and community health. 
 
3rd Quarter - Healthy Relationships
 
4th Quarter - Family Living- In this unit students will recognize the various stages of life from birth through puberty and reproductive years. Students will be able to identify the different organs and functions of the reproductive system. They will be able to explain the stages of child development from conception to birth and how to prevent pregnancy.
 
What do we need for our daily class?
  • Chrome Book (or Computer) w/ online access 
  • Notebook and pencil/pen
  • Ear buds or headphones (if appropriate) 
7th Grade Health
Mr. Harris 

What will I be learning? 

1st quarter- Nutrition 
Students will learn in detail about the six major nutrients that lead to healthy eating habits. Students will learn to read nutrition labels and apply to their daily diet.

2nd quarter- Noncommunicable Diseases
Students will look at how environmental, hereditary and personal risk factors increase their likelihood of developing an illness.
Students will identify signs, symptoms, treatment and prevention strategies for noncommunicable disease.
 
3rd quarter- DARE
Students will investigate the effects of drugs on personal and community health. Students will learn good decision-making skills to help them lead safe and healthy lives.
 
4th Quarter- Concepts of Physical Activity 
Students will learn the fitness elements of strength, endurance, flexibility, body composition and how they apply to their Fitnessgram assessments.  Students will also learn how goal setting helps achieve fitness goals.

6th Grade Health

What will I be learning? 
 
1st quarter- Decision Making/Goal Setting/Communication
 
Students will learn the six steps of the decision making and goal setting processes and be able to apply them to real life situations. The students will use the goal setting process to set a goal for them to achieve. Students will learn proper techniques of appropriate communication using eye contact, showing interest, answering speakers' questions and not giving mixed messages.
 
2nd quarter- Tobacco/Alcohol

Students will learn about tobacco and alcohol, where tobacco and alcohol come from and how they are made, short and long-term risks associated with usage, physical and psychological dependence, addiction, relapse, and recovery. Students will learn alternatives to stay tobacco and alcohol free.
 
3rd quarter- First Aid
 
Students will learn basic first aid to treat minor and severe injuries, including how to wrap a sprain, how to treat bleeding/severe bleeding, what to do if someone is choking, and what to do if someone is unresponsive. The students will know and demonstrate the skills needed to help someone survive a minor or severe injury or situation

4th Quarter- Safety

Students will learn different ways to stay safe, including internet safety, bicycle safety, home safety, gun safety, and fire safety. Students will create their own home fire escape plan and know how to stay safe in any of these situations.
