Pirates swat, sweep Demons 3-1

RR Volleyball

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (Oct. 1, 2024) -- Rocky River earned a gutsy 3-1 victory over an 11-win Westlake squad in Tuesday Cleveland West Conference action at Rocky River Gymnasium. The Pirates and Demons (11-6, 6-5 CWC) split the first two sets of the evening, and the home side rallied for 25-22 triumphs in games 3 and 4.

With the 25-20, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22 conquest on home hardwood, River earned a two-match CWC sweep over the Demons; the Pirates had downed Westlake 3-1 at WHS Sept. 5. The win for the Pirates (9-3, 9-2) marked a rebound after a Saturday setback in a non-conference tilt at Brecksville. In conference play, the River Raiders have now earned five straight wins.

"This was an amazing team effort tonight," said coach Wendy Raffin. "That's something we have going -- momentum with our play as a whole team."

The Pirates are now 4-1 in their last five matches against Westlake. That's a bounce-back from the Demons dropping the Double-R in eight straight from 2016-22.

Tuesday's contest at the Corner of Wagar & Detroit marked the first of three matches this week for the Rocky River Swat Team. River will be at Lakewood Thursday and then host a quad-match (Chardon, Elyria Catholic, North Ridgeville) on Saturday.
