Bucs bolt past Bearcats, advance in district tourney

RR Girls Soccer

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (Oct. 14, 2024) -- As was all-but-prescribed by the everyone-in format of the OHSAA postseason, the DIII Region 11 No. 2 Pirates found twine on just about every other touch in the first 12 minutes of play and Rocky River went on to dismantle the No. 45 Bedford Bearcats 8-0 in Monday's Northeast 6 District Tournament opener.

Sophia Sindelar (three goals), Grace Quaiser (1G, three assists), Clara DeWitt (1G, 2A), and Addie Russell (1G, 1A) were the top scorers for the River Raiders.

For the Pirates (17-0-1), Sindelar has now scored three-plus goals in five straight matches. She has scored 44 goals this season.

Sindelar and six other seniors will take on the Holy Name Green Wave in the next round of district play. Holy Name, the No. 30 seed in the bracket, defeated No. 40 Ashtabula Lakeside 8-0 on Monday. That contest at Rocky River Stadium -- next Monday , Oct. 21 -- will mark the final home game for a Class of 2025 group which is 37-2 at home since 2021.

That's a talented senior class playing a great game they love. And they're part of a larger group of young athletes across Girls High School Soccer who have worked and played hard since late summer. That includes the Bedford side bussed over for Monday's mismatch on Detroit Road. In all, its an impressive group of young ladies.

Wish the same could be said about the bloated brackets into which they are all flung.
