A River runs through it: Pirates crush Normandy in CWC road tilt

Jacob Radcliffe

CLEVELAND (Jan. 10, 2025) -- Three days after Rocky River suffered its worst loss of the season -- a 75-41 setback vs. Lakewood on Tuesday -- the Pirates earned a win by their widest margin of the season, as River routed an overmatched Normandy five 74-24 Friday.

River shooters splashed on a season-high 13 triples in the 50-point triumph. The Pirates outscored the Invaders 28-0 in the second quarter and were only held to 74 overall points by a second-half running clock.

Six Rocky River (7-4, 4-2 Cleveland West Conference) players netted seven points or more in what marked a bounce-back win not only in response to the Lakewood game but to a bad loss to Normandy (2-8, 0-7) in the last meeting between the two programs (69-46 Invaders win Dec. 8, 2023). Junior Jacob Radcliffe (19 points), sophomore Danny Berg (13P), and junior Jeff Maslar (10P) were River's top scorers.

Berg and freshman Rowan Kennedy each drained three 3-pointers in a contest that saw the Sons of Blackbeard bounce back from a  4-of-17 (23.5%) performance from distance in the Tuesday loss. Five of the Pirates' 13 buckets from beyond the arc came in the decisive second quarter.

River's rebound at Normandy marked the front end of a weekend double. The Maroon & White will host a 7 p.m. conference game against North Olmsted Saturday.
