ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – The Rocky River High School (RRHS) and Rocky River Middle School (RRMS) Science Olympiad teams competed at the Northern Ohio Region 4 Tournament on Saturday at Rocky River High School. Both teams had strong showings with top finishes in multiple events.
The middle school team finished in third place to earn a spot at the state tournament, while the high school team just missed out on a spot at the state meet with a fifth place showing at regionals.
The state tournament is on April 26 at The Ohio State University.
Listed below are highlights from the regional competition.
RRMS
- 1st place in Write-It/Do-It (Kate Glavin and Zoe Tronche)
- 2nd place in Air Trajectory (Kareem Shahin and Patrick Murray)
- 2nd place in Meteorology (Brielle Schaffer and Neko Tabora)
- 2nd place in Tower (Sarah Perrego and Aiden Bakos)
- 3rd place in Tower (Evelyn Erb and Emma Vance)
- 3rd place in Meteric Mastery (Zoe Tronche and Kate Glavin)
- 3rd place in Fossils (Neko Tabora and Patrick Murray)
- 3rd place in Experimental Design (Anna Leonard, Brielle Schaffer and Evelyn Erb)
- 3rd place in Dynamic Planet (Kareem Shahin and Patrick Murray)

- 3rd place in Optics (Julia Leslie and Nivrut Choudavarapu) and 5th (AJ Banerjee and Lanie McCarthy)

- 4th place in Chemistry Lab (Luke Buehrle and Rosie Murray)
- 4th place in Disease Detectives (Jason Fan and Delaney Keaton)
- 4th place in Experimental Design (Keira Kishna, Julia Leslie, and Beatrix Stickney)
- 4th place in Material Science (Sully Murray and Gigi Moeller)
- 4th place in Microbe Mission (Luke Buehrle and Cami Carroll)
- 5th place in Helicopter (Jude Schrader and Niket Choudavarapu)
Science Olympiad competitions have 23 events and Rocky River competes as a team of 15 people. Events are judged individually and the team is scored as a whole. The Science Olympiad team spent September through January preparing for events that led up to the regional competition.
The mission of Science Olympiad is to inspire student interest in science outside of the school curriculum through active, hands-on participation in and exposure to STEM disciplines.
