Dear Parents,


     This year your child's spelling program may be different from what you've come to expect as "spelling."
In the Rocky River School District, the Sitton Spelling program begins in fourth grade and is aimed at instructing children how to be lifetime spellers and not just memorizers of words.  The Sitton Spelling philosophy is that words aren't really mastered until they are spelled correctly in everyday writing.  Fourth graders are responsible to learn "core words" and in addition, it is imparative that all students master the "No Excuses Priority Word List".


     This program includes:

     NO traditional spelling tests
     NO weekly word lists sent home
     Skill-Building exercises
     Take-Home tasks
     A 4th grade level "No Excuses List" (Priority Words) of all words students are expected to spell correctly all the time in all subjects during the year. Please print and post this list on the refrigerator or on a desk so it will be easy to find.
      A list of the words 4th graders are responsible to learn this year titled "Core Words".  
      A "WORDS TO LEARN" list of spelling words your child has not yet mastered. These words are recorded in your child's personal Quick Word Book.

      Priority words on assignments in other subjects.

      *PLEASE NOTE:  Words not capitalized correctly will be counted as misspelled.

      The goal of this program is to teach our kids strategies to become better spellers in writing, not just spell well on a test. Be watching for take-home activities to do with your child to help him/her become a better speller.
