Rocky River High School National Merit Finalists

Three members of Rocky River High School’s Class of 2014 who were recognized as Semifinalists in the prestigious National Merit Competition last fall have advanced to Finalist status. Emma McGorray, Enkhe-Tuyaa Dugarova Montgomery and William J. Spallino are now eligible for the final stage in the National Merit Competition.   

Natalie El Dabh Places First in Rotary Four-Way Test Speech Contest
Rocky River High School senior Natalie El Dabh won first place in the Rotary Club’s annual Four-Way Test Speech Contest for Rotary International District 6630 (northeast Ohio) on April 5, 2014. Natalie qualified for the district contest by placing first in the Rotary Club of Lakewood and Rocky River’s speech contest on March 31. Her topic addressed whether the emphasis on college admission keeps students focused on resume-builders rather than moral development.  
RRHS Academic Challenge Team Advances to State Finals

The Rocky River Academic Challenge finished as runners-up at the Northwest Regional tournament in Tiffin, OH this Saturday. The team now qualifies as one of 12 teams to compete in the state finals on May 3. Team members present for the competition were sophomore Sai Vellala, junior Isabella Heimke, and seniors John Anderton, Maria Franko, Emma McGorray, Tuyaa Montgomery, and Will Spallino. Congratulations to them all on the achievement.    

Pirate Press Staff Win Awards at OSMA
Seven members of the Pirate Press staff along with adviser Ashley Morris attended the annual Ohio Scholastic Media Association’s (OSMA) annual conference and banquet on Friday, April 4, 2014. Students attended workshops and heard speakers on a variety of journalism and high school newspaper hot topics. The attended sessions ranged in topics from journalistic ethics and responsible use of social media to how to capture the perfect story and the future of newspapers. 
RRHS Choirs Perform at Grand Ole Opry
The Grand Ole Opry® presented by Humana® showcases talented students through their Music City Performance Program. The Rocky River High School Choir was welcomed by the Grand Ole Opry® and its’ patrons prior to the March 28th, 2014 performance.  
Pirate Pride Award
The Pirate Pride award recognizes students who get "caught doing something good." A student may be nominated who has demonstrated a behavior that goes above and beyond the ordinary in terms of kindness, civility, or citizenship. 

The Pirate Pride winner for the week of April 14th is junior Adam Wenner. Mrs. Colleen McGovern had nominated Adam for his finding and returning a wallet containing cash, a driver's license, and other important items. We were able to return the wallet to the person who had lost it and she was very happy. Congratulations to Adam for taking the right action!
2014 Fitness Summer School

On behalf of the Rocky River City School District, we are pleased to announce a new Summer School Fitness 2014 opportunity available to all RRHS students in grades 9-12 (including incoming freshmen).  Summer school registration starts Monday, March 17, 2014.  For your convenience, please refer to the link for an informational flyer, application, and required EMA form.  Forms will also be available at the Board of Education Office.  All registration occurs in person at:

National Merit Semifinalists & Commended Students
Three seniors have been named "Semi-Finalists" in the National Merit Competition and will continue on in the competition for scholarships, which will be awarded in the Spring.  We are so pleased to congratulate Emma L. McGorray, Tuyaa Montgomery, and William J. Spallino.  We wish each of you continued success in the competition! In addition, the following students have been recognized as "Commended" students in the 2014 National Merit Program: John Anderton, Elisabeth Cahill, Natalie El Dabh, Megan Killeen, Kevin Mahoney and Alexandra Manoloff.  Congratulations to all!
Rocky River High School Earns AP Honor Roll Distinction

Rocky River City School District is one of 477 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the 4th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for increasing access to AP® course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams.
