Dr. Michael Shoaf Announces Retirement Plan as RRCSD Superintendent

March 22, 2024

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Rocky River City School District Superintendent Dr. Michael G. Shoaf announced to the Board of Education that he plans to retire on December 31, 2025. Dr. Shoaf has been the Superintendent of the Rocky River City School District since 2007.

During his superintendency, Rocky River students and staff have achieved many successes at local, state, and national levels. The district’s accomplishments under Dr. Shoaf’s leadership have been numerous. The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce has ranked the district in the top-10 districts statewide for the past 12 years, including six years in the top-3. RRCSD has earned four National Blue Ribbon Awards from the U.S. Department of Education with two at Rocky River High School (2012, 2020) and two at Kensington Intermediate School (2011, 2023).

Dr. Shoaf has worked hard to achieve economic stability for the district while making sure that our class sizes were appropriate and our facilities are first rate, safe, and conducive to effective teaching and learning. Dr. Shoaf successfully navigated challenges faced by the district during his superintendency, including the district’s growing technology and equipment needs, state funding changes, and COVID-19. We are happy to say that the district is in a sound position to move forward.

The Board would like to thank Dr. Shoaf for his many years of service to the district. The Board would also like to thank Dr. Shoaf for sharing his retirement plan well in advance to allow the Board to plan for this important transition.

Dr. Shoaf will step down as Superintendent on July 31, 2025 and will serve as Special Advisor to the Board until his retirement on December 31, 2025. As Special Advisor, Dr. Shoaf will be focused on ensuring a smooth transition for our new superintendent and will work closely with the Board on in-depth facilities planning. The Board looks forward to working with Dr. Shoaf until his retirement.

The Board will begin its search for a new superintendent later in 2024 with the hope of announcing a new superintendent a year from now.
