River boxes up Ramblers 3-1

RR Hockey

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (Nov. 18, 2023) -- Rocky River clocked a 3-1 win over Erie (Pa.) Cathedral Prep junior varsity in Saturday action at day 2 of the Tim Alexander Memorial Tournament at Hamilton Ice Arena.

A day after being shut out on 27 shots, the Pirates (1-1) put 44 efforts on frame while allowing just eight as they overmatched their visitors from Pennsylvania. Junior goaltender Lincoln Greear stopped 7-of-8 pucks in the Saturday morning battle on home ice. The lone goal Greear allowed was a short-handed effort for the Ramblers. All goals in the game, in fact, were registered in special-teams situations. There was almost no other way to net a goal in a contest rife with a combined 60 penalty minutes (Cathedral 52, Rocky River 8).

River scored its first goal early in the second period (senior Luke Skapoulas). The Hilliard Boulevard Buccaneers doubled that lead by the midpoint of the third when senior A.J. Ritvo scored 32 seconds into a powerplay. The Ramblers answered with 2:11 remaining in the game. Three Ramblers and a Pirate were in the box when senior Michael Allen put things out of reach 30 seconds later.

For the game, the Maroon & White went 3-for-6 on the powerplay.

The Rocky River-hosted tournament will continue Sunday. The Pirates will face the Canton-Akron Jets Hockey Club Sunday at 10:15 a.m.
