#RrSchools January Highlights

The month of January was filled with many highlights and accomplishments throughout the Rocky River City School District. Here is a quick look back at some of those highlights.



  • RRCSD presented its annual State of the Schools presentation. The event was once again hosted by the Lakewood/Rocky River Rotary Club.
  • The RRCSD Treasuer’s Office produced its inaugural Popular Annual Financial Report.
  • Goldwood Primary School hosted Kindergarten Information Night, welcoming students and families in the Class of 2036.
  • RRCSD participated in the Great Kindness Challenge from January 23-27, helping create a culture of kindness with daily challenges.
  • RRCSD was recognized by the Healthy Business Council of Northeast Ohio for promoting healthy worksite practices. The district received a Gold Award for medium-sized employers.
  • A total of 12 Rocky River High School (RRHS) students combined to earn 18 awards in the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards regional contest. The group combined to receive five Gold Awards, four Silver Awards and nine Honorable Mention Awards. 
  • A total of five students – four from Rocky River High School and one from Rocky River Middle School combined to earn nine awards in the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards regional contest. The group received one Gold Key Award, two Silver Key Awards and six Honorable Mention Awards.
  • The RRHS and RRMS Science Olympiad teams had a successful showing at the 10th Annual Westlake Science Olympiad Invitational on January 7. The RRHS team placed first in the Northern Region and 18th overall as both squads earned several awards at the Invitational.
  • Kensington third grade students hosted a successful Caribbean-themed concert.
  • The RRHS Robotics team competed in its second competition of the season.
  • A total of 23 RRMS eighth graders were in American History classes at Rocky River Middle School (RRMS) participated in The Patriot's Pen, a national essay contest sponsored by the VFW. Alex Bogre, Isadora Manellari and Elizabeth Smalley received additional awards as the top three essays submitted. This year’s theme was My Pledge to Our Veterans.
  • RRHS/RRMS Team Unify hosted a basketball tournament with six other teams at RRHS.
  • The RRHS Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Chorale and Treble Ensemble were featured performers at the 19th Annual Northeast Ohio Band Invitational =at Severance Music Center.
  • The RRHS drama department and stage crew began preparations for this year’s spring musical, Bright Star.
  • The RRHS boys and girls swimming and diving teams both won the Great Lakes Conference championship.
  • The RRHS ice hockey team captured its second straight Great Lakes Conference championship.
  • The RRMS 8th grade Maroon boys basketball team won the GLC title.
  • The RRMS wrestling team placed fifth at the GLC championship.
  • The RRHS boys basketball team enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime experience with a game against Westlake H.S. at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, home of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
  • Beach Preschool held a school-wide Fashion Show as an extension to its clothing study. The children chose clothes that made them feel the best about themselves before strutting down the catwalk.
  • The 2nd quarter of the school year concluded on January 20 and the 3rd quarter began on January 24.
