FAQ’s
Please click here to visit our FAQ website. If you have a question regarding the extended school closure and COVID-19, please click here to submit it.

Will school events such as awards ceremonies, prom, and graduation be rescheduled if they can not happen on the scheduled dates?
We are hopeful to reschedule many school events, but are waiting for further guidance on reopening schools before setting the new dates. RRHS prom has already been rescheduled from May 2, 2020, to May 29, 2020, at The Cleveland Westin. We have and will continue to do everything we can to reschedule events, but as always, the health, safety, and well-being of our students, staff, and community remains our top priority.

Will RR teachers begin teaching new material if the school closure continues beyond April 6?
Yes. Teachers will introduce new material beginning Monday, April 6.

Is there a plan in place to get individualized learning for each class beginning April 6?
Students who are on Individualized Education Plans are receiving instruction specific to their identified needs. Case managers have been in contact with families with a plan for what that looks like for their child. If you have not heard from your case manager, please contact Jennifer Norman ([email protected]).

When will assignments and grades for the fourth quarter be visible in ProgressBook?
Assignments and grades for quarter 4 are posted in ProgressBook. Click grades on the left side of the screen- then on the right side of the screen, click Q4 for quarter 4 grades.

How will state testing and assessments be handled?
State testing has been waived for the 2019-2020 school year. The Ohio Senate and House passed House Bill 197 (HB 197) on March 25, and Governor Mike DeWine signed the bill which included waiving of state testing and state report cards for this year. To view the contents of HB 197, please click here.

I hope you and your families continue to stay safe and healthy during this time and I encourage you to continue to follow the guidelines and recommendations being set by the Ohio Department of Health.

Thank you for your continued support of the Rocky River City School District.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael G. Shoaf
Superintendent

Rocky River City School District (RRCSD)

  • In keeping with Governor DeWine’s Stay at Home order, all RRCSD buildings are closed through Monday, April 6. During this time, there will be no school or school-sponsored athletics, activities, or meetings. If the closure is extended, we will communicate that via email.

  • The RRCSD has a comprehensive website to provide a listing of resources and support services that are available to assist students and families during the extended school closure.

House Bill 197 (H.B. 197)

  • On Wednesday, the Ohio General Assembly approved H.B. 197 that Governor DeWine said he will sign. The bill addresses several important public education issues, including:

    • Waiving state testing and state report cards for the 2019-2020 academic year.

    • Waiving usual requirements to permit high school seniors who were on track to graduate before the crisis.

    • Exempting schools from retaining students in the third grade under the Third-Grade Reading Guarantee,

    • Granting local governments, including school boards, the flexibility to meet remotely with provisions for public participation.

    • Lifting the cap on granting credit for distance learning, allowing schools to use distance learning to make up for the weeks school will be closed.

Academics

  • Assignments for week 3 of the extended school closure (March 30-April 3) for grades K-5 will begin posting to the district and building websites on Friday, March 27. Assignments from week 1 and week 2 will remain available on the website. FAQ’s

Following are questions we are receiving from parents/guardians. Please use this form to submit any questions you may have regarding the extended school closure.

Is there an update regarding the 8th grade Washington, DC trip?

The final payment for the June 2-4, 2020, Washington, DC trip has been postponed until April 24. A decision about the trip will be made prior to that date.

Will teachers start to use Zoom to hold classes?

Zoom is one of several resources available for teachers to use during the extended school closure, along with Achieve3000, Successmaker, ALEKS, MyOn, Wonder, text resources, Google Classroom, Screencastify, and Studies Weekly to name others. If grades 6-12 teachers plan to meet with their class via Zoom, they are required to do so during their normally scheduled class time.

How will exams be administered?

During the extended school closure from March 16-April 6, teachers are posting assignments online for students to complete. If the school closure extends beyond April 6, we will address this matter.

Regarding application for senior scholarships, will students be able to apply on the date originally posted?

If we are unable to hold our Spring Recognition program in person, we will still award scholarships. A Google Form will be shared with all seniors on April 3 and the application will close on April 20. After the application window closes, RRHS administrators and counselors will meet to determine who the recipients are.

We received notification that school will be resuming normal operations on April 6th. Does that mean the students will be back in the school buildings then and no longer completing lessons from home?

Governor DeWine’s Stay at Home order that was introduced on March 22 runs through April 6. During this time, there will be no school or school-sponsored athletics, activities, or meetings in the RRCSD. If the closure is extended, we will communicate that via email.

Thank you for your continued support of the Rocky River City School District.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael G. Shoaf

Superintendent

March 11, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Earlier this week, three cases of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) were confirmed in Cuyahoga County. While there are no known cases in the Rocky River City School District (RRCSD) at this time and we have been given no indication that any RRCSD student, staff, or family are connected in any way to the three cases, we will continue to take proactive measures to ensure the health, safety and welfare of our students and staff.

The RRCSD will always turn to the guidelines and recommendations of the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and our county health department when making school-related decisions surrounding COVID-19, or any matter of public health, including school closure.

With the rise of reported cases of COVID-19 throughout the country and overseas, the RRCSD has made the difficult decision to cancel all international, out-of-state, and in-state field trips immediately until further notice. This was not an easy decision, but we do not want to risk the safety of our students and staff where exposure to COVID-19 may be greater.

  • The decision regarding the June 2-4, 2020, 8th grade field trip to Washington, DC will be made by April 17, 2020.
  • RRCSD staff will work with parents/guardians of affected students on refunds, credits or vouchers for future trips.

If you are planning personal travel in the coming weeks, please review the CDC website with COVID-19 information for travel.

Out of an abundance of caution and to help alleviate parent/guardian concerns, we are also postponing or canceling upcoming events throughout the district to help limit meetings of large groups. These events include:

Postponed

  • RRHS Spring Musical “9 to 5” (March 12-14)
The musical has been postponed until April 23, 24, 25.
Tickets that have already been purchased will be honored for these performances.
  • Band and Choir Concerts/Performances (All grades), including this weekend’s OMEA activities
  • District Art Show
  • Winter Athletics and Activities Awards Banquets (RRMS/RRHS)
  • Book Fairs
  • Special Person’s Day (Beach & Goldwood)
  • Goldwood Family Math & Science Night
  • Kensington PTA Family Game Night
  • Building Transition Nights
  • RRMS Maroon & White Night
  • Lunch & Learn meetings, Coffee Chats, Book Talks, etc.

Cancelled

  • Basketball Challenge Cup
This event will not be rescheduled.
Those who purchased tickets will have their money refunded via Paypal.
Alternatively, if you would like your ticket purchase to be donated toward 7th Grade Challenge Days, please email Dale Cummins ([email protected])
  • RRHS Prom Fashion Show
  • RRMS Spring Sports Meeting
Information will be posted electronically and sent to parents/guardians.

Per recommendations from Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) on March 10, 2020, all outdoor contests will continue until further guidance is provided.

Decisions regarding events such as end-of-year awards assemblies, grade promotion events, National Honor Society, 8th Grade Dance, RRHS Prom, and Commencement will be made at a later time.

As a reminder, to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including COVID-19 and flu, please follow these important tips:

  • Stay home when you are sick. Please be fever-free for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Individuals with chronic health issues and/or individuals experiencing severe symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.

In addition, the Ohio Department of Health has established a Call Center, staffed by licensed nurses and infectious disease experts to answer questions regarding COVID-19 every day from 9:00am until 8:00pm. Call 1-833-4-ASK-ODH (1-833-427-5634).

As you know, this is a dynamic situation and we thank you for your support and understanding with this matter.

Sincerely,

Dr. Michael G. Shoaf
Superintendent

We have obtained assurances from the Federico Garcia Lorca High School administration that all 14 students and two staff members visiting Rocky River are healthy and able to travel to the United States.

If you have questions or concerns please contact my office at 440-356-6715.

Sincerely,
Dr. Michael G. Shoaf

Superintendent

The health, safety and welfare of our students and staff remain the paramount priorities of the Rocky River City School District (RRCSD). When making school-related decisions surrounding Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), or any matter of public health, including school closure, cleaning protocol, and other recommendations, the RRCSD will always turn to the guidelines and recommendations of the National Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention and, by extension, our county health department.
