Pirates prevail at Normandy, move on in GLC brackets

Tommy Bebie

PARMA, Ohio -- Rocky River prevented more scores than Normandy did. That's the odd but apt summary for the Pirates' 35-31 win over the Invaders on Tuesday night.

The road triumph snapped a four-game losing streak for the Sons of Blackbeard, and it propelled River another click into the Great Lakes Conference Tournament bracket. The Pirates -- the No. 5 seed in the 10-team tournament -- are now slated to play an east or west neighbor -- No. 8 Lakewood or No. 1 Bay -- on Feb. 16.

On Tuesday, Rocky River (8-11) was held under 40 points for a third time in the last two weeks. But the Pirates managed a win nonetheless. The outcome in the defensive slugfest marked just the second time in the last eight years that River has won a game scoring 35 points or less (Feb. 18, 2020, vs. Parma).

"Our guys showed a lot of heart," said Head Coach Mike Murray. "We couldn't get shots to fall, but the guys kept fighting getting stops."

The offense the Pirates did muster was led by Robby Lang (14 points), Charlie Hudson (nine), and Braedon Spies (seven).
