Red Ribbon Week 2014

If you’re at Goldwood Primary School this week, be sure to take note of the interesting way the students are dressed. It’s Red Ribbon Week, and in honor of this anti-drug initiative, the students are focusing on what they love about themselves.

Monday was “LOVE What You Do” day, when students were encouraged to wear something from an outside activity in which they are involved. There were lots of sports shirts, as well as ballerinas in leotards, Scouts in uniform, and gamers in Minecraft Ts.

Tuesday is “LOVE Your Home Town Pride” Rocky River spirit wear and maroon and white outfits.

Wednesday is “LOVE Your Friends and Treat Them With Respect” day, when the students will dress alike—in blue jeans with red on top, to signify the friendship that’s shared throughout the building.

Thursday, “LOVE Your ‘Lids‛ and What‛s Inside Them” day, is a chance for the kindergarteners, first-graders, and second-graders to wear their favorite hats. As for Friday, when the students aren’t in costume for their class Halloween parties, many of them will be wearing their craziest, mismatched socks for “LOVE Your Crazy Side.”

“Red Ribbon Week at Goldwood is all about taking the opportunity to remind children about the importance of making healthy choices,” explains Guidance Counselor Peg Liberatore. “Our themes revolve around behaviors that can assist them in making the best choices as they grow up!” The goal, then, is that these days of focusing on their strengths and loves will help the kids to remember what they’re protecting by making healthy choices in life.

Red Ribbon Week coincides with the PTA’s annual fall food drive. Students are encouraged to bring in specific items on specific days (like Mac n’ Cheese Monday and PB&J Wednesday, but any non-perishable, non-glass items are welcomed. All the donations will go to the Rocky River Assistance Program to support local families in need.

All week long at Goldwood, children are learning to love themselves and love their neighbors as well.
