Panthers pounce on River miscues, rule an 11-1 runs exchange

RR Softball

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (April 16, 2024) -- The Pirates were undone by six errors, as Rocky River fell to Elyria Catholic 11-1 in Tuesday Great Lakes Conference West Division action at Pirate Field.

The Panthers (5-3, 4-0 GLC West) scored runs in four of the five innings in the run-rule affair at the Corner of Northview & 90. In all four of these scoring innings, EC tallied at least one unearned plate crossing. For the game, the Panthers out-hit the Pirates 11-2.

The top of the EC order did much damage in the contest. The Panthers' 1-through-4 batters went a combined 7-for-14, with a double, two home runs, and six runs batted in. Freshman outfielder Jessica Conner smacked two homers for the visiting nine.

Out of the first two slots in the batting order, Sienna DeMooy (two walks) and Rylie Quaiser (single) combined to get aboard three times for Rocky River (4-6, 2-2). But the rest of the order went just 1-for-13 with two free passes. Two Panther pitchers, Kailey Tomasch and Harper Morgan, combined to whiff 11 River batters.

With her two walks DeMooy raised her team-leading on-base percentage to .469.

For the Pirates, the GLC home test marked the first of three scheduled games on the week. The Pirates are slated to play a Wednesday home GLC crossover against Normandy Wednesday and then a non-conference road tilt at St. Joseph Friday.
