A season ending north of Columbus, but a state-ment made

RR Girls Golf

CUYAHOGA FALLS, Ohio (Oct. 11, 2023) -- The Maroon & White had a highly successful fall campaign come to an end Wednesday at Brookledge Golf Course. Rocky River junior Mia Ginnetti and senior Chloe Holton competed as individuals in the 96-player field of the DI Northeast District qualifier at Brookledge. Just four slots in the Oct. 20-21 OHSAA DI State Tournament were on the line for individuals (four teams would also qualify at Brookledge). [Results]

Holton placed in a tie for 34th. She carded a 41-47--88. Ginnetti finished in a tie for 48th; she posted a 45-48--93.

"I'm so proud of these two and of our entire team," said coach Jeff Hammond, whose River squad went 19-2 over 21 matches while earning a Lake Erie Girls Golf Association title in the regular season. "This really has been a group of amazing girls. Today, Chloe and Mia put themselves in a terrific field on a challenging golf course."

Gracyn Vidovic-75 (Aurora), Serena Wu-76 (Solon), Gabriella Berlingieri-78 (Stow-Munroe Falls), and Madolyn Kost-78 (Roosevelt) were the four individual qualifiers at the Cuyahoga Falls venue. Berlingieri and Kost qualified after a three-way playoff at 78.

Medina Highland senior Isabella Goyette carded a 40-33--73 to earn medalist honors. Magnificat, Highland, Hudson, and North Canton Hoover were the four qualifying teams.

Holton closed out her tremendous career just one round shy of the Gray Course at Ohio State University. But there was certainly no gray area in what she did on Northeast Ohio golf courses this season. She etched her name in clear black and white as River's season medalist. And, as the league announced last Thursday, as the 2023 LEGGA MVP.

Teammates Ginnetti (First Team All-LEGGA), Julia Schmid (First Team All-LEGGA), Charlotte Roche (Second Team All-LEGGA) and Regan Marshall (honorable mention) were also recognized by the circuit. And that group was led by the LEGGA Coach of the Year in Jeff Hammond.

Not qualified but quality all the way, from August to October. Not state-bound, but a statement made in the best way Pirates can do it -- in swashbuckling fashion.
