River takes Tuesday match-up, earns split with Demons

RR Baseball

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (April 30, 2024) -- On Tuesday, Rocky River snapped an abbreviated two-game skid with a tidy 4-3 triumph over Westlake.

The Pirates (16-2, 5-1 Great Lakes Conference West Division) got strong pitching from left-hander Rees Heigle and a key three-run third inning in what was otherwise a contest controlled by the moundsmen on both sides. Heigle went six innings, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks. He struck out 10.

River plated a solo run in the first and was leading 1-0 when it came to bat in the third. The Sons of Blackbeard cobbled together three walks and two singles in pushing across three runs.

Heigle and southpaw reliever Joe Brant (one inning) protected just enough of River's 4-0 lead the rest of the way.

For the game, the two sides split 10 hits down the middle. Joe Mommers doubled, tripled, and drew a walk in vaulting his season on-base percentage to .594.
