Pirates sink Titans as win streak reaches 12

The Pipe Yard

LORAIN, Ohio (April 19, 2024) -- The season opening win streak continues, and so does the tremendous pitching backing it up. On Friday at the Pipe Yard in Lorain, Rocky River shut out the Lorain Titans 2-0. Henry Tovissi and Griffin Hill combined a combined five hits and five walks while holding the Titans to a 1-for-6 mark with runners in scoring position.

The No. 5 (Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association) Pirates were also held in check by fine Lorain pitching. River scored a solo run in the top of the first when Josh Mommers and Anthony Ferchill opened the game with back-to-back doubles. Starter Tracy Hough would go the distance, allowing just five more hits -- all singles -- after that.

Rocky River's only other run was also set up and scored by Mommers, who went 2-for-2 with a walk for the game. The junior shortstop singled, stole second, and came around to score a run on a Lorain error. Hough was otherwise masterful in pitching out of jams throughout the contest.

Tovissi went 4-2/3 innings, yielding five hits -- all singles -- and three walks. Hill went the final 2-1/3; he allowed two walks. With Friday's seven zeroes hoisted on the Pipe Yard scoreboard, River pitching now owns a sparkling 1.23 ERA for the season.

The Pirates (12-0) will look to up their win streak to a Buccaneer's dozen in a Saturday home game against Avon.
