River rocks Titans after senior salute

RR Seniors

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (April 25, 2024) -- Freshman Reagan Kane and senior Sienna DeMooy combined on a five-inning no-hitter and the Pirates registered 23 base runners in four innings, as Rocky River dismantled Lorain 14-1 in Thursday-afternoon non-conference action at Pirate Field.

The Pirates plated nine runs in the home half of the first and cruised to the blowout win from there. Eight River batters logged hits in the game; Juliana Benjamin (2-for-3, two runs batted in) and Maggie Heigle (2-for-4, double, 4 RBI) had multiple base knocks. Heigle has banged out five hits over the last two days.

Kane breezed in a four-inning outing. She struck out 10 while allowing one unearned run. The lone Titans run came around to score in the top of the fourth. It was produced on a leadoff walk, followed by a stolen base, a throwing error, and a passed ball. DeMooy pitched a scoreless fifth, working around a hit batter and a wild pitch while striking out one.

On offense, a patient horde of Pirates drew 11 walks. Seniors DeMooy and Lillian Sereika and junior Leigh Konet each filed two free passes.

Rocky River (8-7) is now 4-1 since April 19. The Pirates scored 60 runs over those last four wins.

Thursday's chilled-and-breezy-but-sun-splashed contest marked Senior Day for the Double-R. Juliana Benjamin, Sienna DeMooy, Lillian Sereika were recognized in a pregame ceremony.

"That's a great trio of seniors we have," said coach Jeff Hammond. "They have showed strong leadership on and off the field. And they are even better people than they are players."
