Pirates sunk in Thursday non-conference action

RR Softball

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (May 2, 2024) -- Rocky River was routed by a hard-hitting Geneva Eagles team in Thursday-afternoon non-conference action at Pirate Field. Geneva scored in four of the five frames of a run-rule contest in dispatching River 14-2.

The Eagles clubbed three homers and two doubles among 14 hits. Geneva's No. 3 and 4 batters, Anabelle Bragg and Alyssa Palmisano, went a combined 6-for-7 with a double, three round-trippers, and 11 runs batted in. The visitor's traffic on the bases was akin to that on I-90, just a half-a-click away, and they plated six runs in the second inning and five in the fifth as the main columns of their scoring.

Bragg pitched for the Eagles (9-11) and hemmed in the River offense. The Pirates mustered just three hits in the contest, and their runs came in smaller packages. The Maroon & White scored solo runs in the third and fifth. Sienna DeMooy (2-for-3) and Maggie Heigle (1-for-3) batted first and second in the Rocky River (11-10) order. The rest of the lineup went an aggregate 0-for-14.

CANNON FIRE ...

MISS HIT: Juliana Benjamin went 0-for-2 in having a nine-game hit streak snapped. From April 19-May 1, that streak saw Benjamin bat .412 (14-of-34) while collecting 13 RBIs. ... BUSY BUCS TO HOST FAIRVIEW: With Thursday's setback, River dropped to 1-4 at Pirate Field. The Pirates won't have to wait long to edge that mark upward. They will host the Fairview Warriors at the Corner of Northview & 90 on Friday, the fifth straight day of action in this good-weather portion of the schedule.
