Tough-Track Tuesday: Double-R competes at historic course

Canterbury CC

BEACHWOOD, Ohio (Sept. 12, 2023) -- Rocky River competed on hallowed turf Tuesday. The Pirates placed 10th in the 15-team Canterbury Invitational, squaring off against a slew of top teams from the area and against a challenging golf course that figures as one of the best in the Buckeye State.

Senior Chloe Holton carded a respectable 87 in leading the River squad in the event hosted by Laurel School. The Pirates posted a team score of 394 on the 102-year old layout that has hosted three majors (1940 and 1946 US Opens, 1973 PGA Championship) and a pair of United States Amateur Championships (1964, 1979).

"This was an amazing experience for our girls, to play this course, against some of the top high school players in Northeast Ohio and on a windy day," said coach Jeff Hammond.

The tournament action marked Rocky River's first since Aug. 14.

River's four scores were recorded by Holton, Julia Schmid (95), Mia Ginnetti (96), and Charlotte Roche (116).

Highland won the tournament, carding a 314. That figure topped Magnificat (315) by one stroke.
