River runs record to 5-0 with twin Indy wins

ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (Sept. 2, 2023) -- Rocky River went 2-for-the-Hoosier State over the holiday weekend, with the Pirates defeating Zionsville (Ind.) and Indianapolis Cathedral in the Lady Eagle Invitational hosted by Zionsville High School just north of Indianapolis. [Tournament]

On Friday, River defeated the host Eagles 3-1. The Maroon & White then toppled Cathedral 2-1 on Saturday. [Game details unavailable at time of publication.]

Both foes are perrenial contenders in Indiana state tournament play. Zionsville was tabbed No. 5 in the Aug. 28 Indiana Soccer Coaches Association 3A rankings; Cathedral was rated 10th in the same poll.

River won the tournament's Group B, a four-team alignment featuring the Pirates, Cathedral, Sacred Heart (Ky.), and Zionsville. Overall, 12 teams competed in the event which was first played in 2008.

The twin victories kept the Pirates (5-0) undefeated on the young season. They are scheduled to play their first Great Lakes Conference West Division match Wednesday at Fairview.
