CLEVELAND (Aug. 30, 2023) -- The Pirates closed out their August with two more wins, as they remained unbeaten in match play this fall. On Wednesday, Rocky River hosted Copley and Padua in a non-conference tri-match at Little Met Golf Club. As it did the day before, the Double-R doubled up in the win column. The Pirates downed Copley 160-179 and Padua 160-241.

With its four wins this week (RRHS swept Keystone and Westlake Tuesday), Rocky River (9-0) is now 29-1 over its last 30 matches. The most recent two victories were quite impressive.

On a cool, autumnal afternoon in the valley, the Buccaneers carded three scores within 6 strokes of par. River's 160 total set a new program record, eclipsing the 165 RRHS fired at Little Met Aug. 24, 2022.

The new school mark was filed on a 36 (Mia Ginnetti), 39 (Chloe Holton), 40 (Julia Schmid), and 45 (Charlotte Roche) as its components.

"The girls played so well today," said coach Jeff Hammond. "We've had a such a good August, and I can't wait to see what we do in September."

Rocky River's August included the squad establishing a new 18-hole record (356 twice), recording a tournament win (Aug. 10 River Invitational at Big Met Golf Club), and earning four top-10 tournament finishes.

Now, the Pirates head into September. Where, in golf terms, they'll operate with a bar set even lower.


CANNON FIRE ...

ON DECK: Rocky River's next event on the calendar is a Tuesday rivalry match against the Bay Rockets. That Lake Erie Girls Golf Association contest will be held at Sweetbriar Golf Club.

A RALLY IN THE VALLEY: Junior Mia Ginnetti carded a double-bogey on the 320-yard, par-4 second hole at Little Met. Ginnetti bounced back to post her best nine-hole score of the season in a round that included a 1-under stretch from Nos. 3-7. She owns a scoring average of 41.6 this season.
