Raiders force Rockets to walk the blank, win 3-0

RR Baseball

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio (May 12, 2023) -- Rocky River blanked rival Bay 3-0 in Friday-afternoon Great Lakes Conference West Division action. Hudson Wissman (four innings pitched, one hit, two walks, two strikeouts) and Rees Heigle (3-1-4-6) combined on a two-hitter but one fraught with clutch moments. The Rockets put at least one runner on in all seven innings, but they were held to a 2-for-9 mark with runners in scoring position.

Anthony Ferchill, Thomas Rossi, and Wissman keyed a two-run fourth inning which broke a scoreless tie in the well-pitched game. The Buccaneers had been held hitless until Rossi doubled in that two-run fourth.

Wissman kept that lead afloat in the bottom of the fourth when he erased a leadoff error and a single with a double-play grounder and then a ground ball to third. The senior captain induced six ground-outs in his four frames of work.

Rossi doubled again in the fifth inning, exchanging places with Josh Mommers who had doubled to center two batters before. Rossi finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs. His twin two-baggers marked his fourth and fifth of the season. Mommers' double extended a hit streak: he now has a hit in nine straight games.

The Rockets put multiple runners on in each of the last three innings but Heigle was able to deliver the bag of seven bagels to the finish line while lowering his season ERA to 3.54.

Wissman went 2-for-2 with a walk.

The River conquest on rival grounds answered a Bay win (4-2) at the Bus Yard on April 18. The Pirates (8-15, 3-7 GLC West) are slated to host a Saturday home game against Holy Name (11 a.m.).
