Rockets sink Pirates 4-2 in GLC West action

RR Baseball

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (April 18, 2023) -- Rocky River fell to Bay 4-2 in Tuesday afternoon Great Lakes Conference West Division action. Six walks and four Pirate errors fueled the Rocket victory on a chilled afternoon at Rocky River Field.

Strong Bay pitching kept River off the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Pirates pushed across a pair of runs on two singles (Thomas Rossi, Seamus Clark), a Bay error, and a double steal.

The Rockets scored one run in the second and three in the fifth, but only for a lack of key hits did they not have a six- or eight-run lead when Rocky River came up in the seventh. Three Pirate hurlers (Hudson Wissman, Gavin O'Brien, Luke Petrus) worked in and around trouble just about every frame. Wissman fanned eight batters in his four innings pitched, but he also walked six in allowing the four Bay runs; two were earned. O'Brien registered four punchouts in his two innings of work.

The Rockets outhit the Pirates 5-4. Catcher Andrew Chesterfield went 2-for-3 with a walk to pace the visitors.

The loss marked the fourth in a row for the Pirates (4-6, 0-2 GLC West).
