Bucs battle but suffer setback in a one-derful ballgame

RR Baseball

BEREA, Ohio (April 27, 2023) -- The hitting stars of the game were Holy Name's Adam Humenik and Rocky River's Elliott Hibshman. Each had one hit. And they are stars because one would have to be to come away with a base knock against Jaedin Hurd or Hudson Wissman on this day.

In a remarkable pitchers' duel on a chilly afternoon at Baldwin Wallace University's Fisher Field, Holy Name defeated Rocky River 1-0 Thursday. It was as if Hurd and Wissman got loose and warm and no one else did. Hibshman  -- a sophomore notching his first career hit -- logged an infield single in the top of the first. When Humenik came to bat with a man on first in the bottom of the seventh, Hibshman's was still the lone hit on the scorecard.

And Humenik followed a leadoff walk with a single to right. A sacrifice and an intentional walk later, the Green Wave got a walk-off fielder's-choice grounder. In between, it was a parade of zeroes, with neither hurler allowing a base hit. Both would issue the odd walk now and then and work out of a mini-jam or two, but Hurd and Wissman hung bagel after bagel on the scoreboard. The only thing more plentiful than zeroes over those many hitless innings were the Ks in the scorebook.

Hurd's final line: one hit and three walks allowed -- while fanning seven -- over seven innings. Wissman walked four and struck out eight in his 6-1/3 frames.

With his gem on the mound, Wissman lowered his season ERA to 4.04.

Rocky River (4-10) is scheduled to play at North Olmsted Saturday.
