Seniors saluted but River raided by Panthers 8-1

RR Baseball Seniors

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (May 6, 2023) -- The Rocky River Pirates were able to get back to action this weekend, but they ran into a buzz saw in the form of the Elyria Catholic Panthers. On Saturday, the Panthers completed a Friday-Saturday, Great Lakes Conference West Division sweep of the Pirates with an 8-1 victory at Rocky River Field.

The Double-R was undone by five errors in the game: EC scored three runs in the first inning, one in the third, and four in the seventh. All eight were unearned runs partially propped up by River miscues. Strong Panther pitching kept the Sons of Blackbeard off the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh when Dan Capka singled and came around to score on a Josh Mommers RBI hit. Three of Rocky River's six hits came in that final at-bat.

Elyria Catholic got its runs on 10 hits and eight walks. Anthony Ferchill (one inning pitched), Hudson Wissman (5 IP), and Sean Connelly (1 IP) split River's mound work in what marked the squad's third straight loss.

Most of the Raiders' offense was locked up in the top two spots of the batting order with Mommers (1-for-2, two walks) and Ferchill (2-for-3, walk) combining to reach six times. River went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

The Buccaneers (5-13, 1-5 GLC West) are slated to travel down Wagar Rd. to take on Fairview Monday.

With their hits Saturday, Anthony Ferchill and Josh Mommers both extended what are now four-game hitting streaks. Each has garnered six hits over that stretch.

SENIOR SEND-OFF: Saturday marked Senior Day for the Rocky River Baseball program. Six Pirate greybeards -- Sean Connelly, Seamus Clark, Gavin O'Brien, Charlie Russell, Nathan Wing, and Hudson Wissman -- were honored in an on-field ceremony.
