Undone by 1: Rocky River falls to Fairview 5-4

RR Baseball

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (May 9, 2023) -- A late-game charge led Fairview to a 5-4 win over Rocky River, as the Warriors prevailed Tuesday and leveled a two-day, Great Lakes Conference West Division home-and-home series at 1-1.

The visitors rallied from a midgame 4-2 deficit, getting clutch hits in the fifth and sixth innings and keeping the River offense shuttered over its final three innings. Fairview leveraged seven Pirate walks and four River errors in rebounding from a 14-0 loss to the Pirates on Monday.

Rocky River (6-14, 2-6 GLC West) outhit the Warriors 12-4 but was somewhat undone by a 1-for-9 performance with runners in scoring position. The errors didn't help either. Gavin O'Brien (two innings pitched) and Julian Patti (4-2/3 IP) combined to work the bulk of the game for the Buccaneers. They combined to yield three unearned runs.

Michael Perry and Thomas Rossi each garnered a pair of hits to lead the River attack. Rossi also filed a pair of stolen bases. Josh Mommers went 1-for-3 with a walk in extending a hit streak that has now reached six games.

Tuesday's GLC action continued what is a busy week for the Sons of Blackbeard. Rocky River will host Columbia Wednesday. The Pirates are slated to play road games Thursday (at Gilmour) and Friday (at Bay).
