Pirates flatten Waves 6-0

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (Aug. 28, 2023) -- On Monday, the Maroon & White finished off a match against the Green Wave. A game that started Wednesday but was suspended after nine minutes due to inclement weather was completed Monday evening with a different kind of electricity -- the River offense replacing lightning -- and resulting in a different spelling of "rain", one with the Pirates supreme in a Great Lakes Conference battle against Holy Name.

Taking a 1-0 lead into Monday's resumption, Rocky River continued to splash around in the Green Gave zone, finding goals now and then while allowing little possession time at its own end. It all made for a five-day, 6-0 shutout, with the Pirates taking down the Green Wave for a fifth straight time since Holy Name last got the best of Rocky River (2-1 HNHS win on Sept. 26, 2018).

The Pirates (3-0, 1-0 GLC) allowed just one shot on goal, a 30-yard free kick easily handled by River goalkeeper Rylie Quaiser, who split time with Caitln Rose in what amounted to occupying a poor standing-room-only placement for watching much of the game action some 70-to-95 yards away. Rocky River dominated possession time, turning those consistent touches in to goals six times over with three goals in the first half and three in the second.

Sophia Sindelar scored half of those six goals, netting her ninth, 10th, and 11th goals of the season. With that performance, Sindelar closed out a remarkable 25-point August.

Other scorers Monday were Ava Patti, Mackenzie Russell, and Kylie Crane. Patti had two assists to register a four-point game. Addie Russell and Rory Vesy also logged assists in what marked River's first shutout of 2023.

Next up for the Pirates is a trip to Indianapolis. On Friday and Saturday, the Double-R will tangle with a pair of high-quality Hoosier State programs in the Zionsville Lady Eagles Invitational hosted by Zionsville High School in the Indianpolis area. On Friday, the Buccaneers will battle host Zionsville, which finished the 2022 season ranked No. 4 in the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association 3A rankings. On Saturday, River will square off against Cathedral, which finished last fall as the No. 11 team in those same rankings.
