Bucs struggle but still post soggy 10th-place finish in Monday invite

PARMA, Ohio (Aug. 14, 2023) -- The previously red-hot Pirates struggled with rainy conditions and wayward approach shots as they logged their highest team score since Sept. 8 at Monday's Flamingo Frenzy at Ridgewood Golf Course. River carded a 384 to finish 10th in a field of 21 teams.

"We really battled the weather and an off day as a team to earn a top-10 finish," said coach Jeff Hammond. "The finish on a day when we hit some shaky shots shows the talent this group has, but we have some things to clean up in our approach on the course."

The Pirates' top scores were posted by Chloe Holton (44-40--84) and Mia Ginnetti (47-41--88). Holton's round included an impressive rally after a 7-6-7-5 start on her first four holes (Nos. 8-11).

Rocky River, which had carded a pair of 356s in tournaments last week, is slated to return to action Tuesday with the squad's first match of the season. The Pirates will take on Columbia at Pine Brook Golf Course in Grafton. The match between the Pirates and Raiders marks the open of Lake Erie Girls Golf Association play for Rocky River. In 2022, the Double-R went 10-0 to win the LEGGA regular-season title. The Buccaneers logged a runner-up finish in the 2022 LEGGA Championship Tournament (Sept. 8).
