River rocks field in home invitational

RR Girls Golf

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio (Aug. 10, 2023) -- For the Rocky River Girls Golf program, the action in Thursday's home tournament in the valley amounted to another low blow. One day after the Pirates obliterated a nine-year-old scoring record (367 posted at an event in 2014) by firing a 356, the Double-R doubled down and did it again. The Buccaneers matched that 356 figure and took first in Thursday's River Invitational at Big Met Golf Course.

With senior Chloe Holton shooting a 7-over 38-41--79, earning medalist honors in the field of 40-plus golfers, Rocky River turned aside six other teams in winning hardware for a second straight day (RR filed a third-place finish at Wednesday's Edison Invitational at Thunderbird Hills Golf Club). The victory marked the Pirates' first since Aug. 8, 2022 (Lake Erie Girls Golf Association Preview). It was built on Holton's fine round and the play of Mia Ginnetti (43-40--83), Julia Schmid (42-44--86), and Charlotte Roche (58-50--108).

The Pirates' score of 356 on the par-72, 5,640-yard track was well clear of runner-up Cloverleaf, which tallied a 394.

Peg Thursday's event, which was hosted by Rocky River High School, as being colored by some local knowledge on the course along the banks of the Rocky River. And for a team now off until Aug. 14 (Flamingo Frenzy at Ridgewood Golf Club in Parma), it ended the week on another low.

As was the plan.
