River gets underway with Tuesday tourney at Bunker Hill

MEDINA, Ohio (Aug. 8, 2023) -- Rocky River opened its 2023 campaign Tuesday with the Pirates placing seventh in a field of 12 teams at the Brunswick Tee-Off Classic.

The Pirates were led by the veteran trio of junior Mia Ginnetti (44-42--86), junior Julia Schmid (46-41--87), and senior Chloe Holton (45-44--89). River's fourth score was a 117 (Regan Marshall, Charlotte Roche). The squad's 379 tally bested five foes on a talented standings board in what marked Rocky River's first event of the fall.

Schmid's 41 on the inward nine marked her best nine-hold score since Sept. 13 (39 in a match vs. Wellington at Big Met Golf Course).

The winning score on the 4,972-yard, par-72 grounds at Bunker Hill Golf Course was a 284 posted by Magnificat. The Blue Streaks were 19 strokes clear of Highland (303).

Highland's Isabella Boyette (34-35--69) and Magnificat's Cammy Reed (33-36--69) were co-medalists in the tournament hosted by Brunswick High School.

"It was great to get going today," said coach Jeff Hammond, whose team returns several starters from a team that went 20-1 and won a regular-season Lake Erie Girls Golf Association crown last autumn. "We have such a good group -- on and off the course -- and I'm excited to see how we compete."

The coach and his charges will not have to wait long to get back to the links. River is scheduled to play in Wednesday's Edison Invitational at Thunderbird Hills Golf Course in Huron.
