River rocks Holy Name 7-0

RR Boys Soccer

PARMA HEIGHTS. Ohio (Aug. 23, 2023) -- On Wednesday afternoon, Rocky River played a team called the Green Wave. But it was the Pirates who made a big splash. River netted seven twine-finders against just one shot on goal, as the Pirates defeated Holy Name 7-0.

Seniors Zach Kern and Chris Saade each scored twice as Rocky River (2-0) tallied its most goals in an August games since Aug. 25, 2020 (seven goals vs. Fairview). The Pirates scored three goals in the first half and four in the second. They outshot the Green Wave 14-1 in shots on goal.

Stephen Cain lifted the lid on the game's scoring, when he banged in a pass from Kern in the 18th minute. Cain assisted on a Gabriel Schroth 8-yarder six minutes later, and the visiting Raiders were off to a productive start.

Kern scored his first goal of the season off a Sebastian Maher corner kick, and River toted a 3-0 lead into the break.

The Pirates doubled that 3-0 lead over the first 10 minutes of the second stanza, and they coasted to their second road win of the season. Chris Saade netted River's first two goals of the second half. Eric Gorius and Kern tidied up the score sheet.

Rocky River is now 2-0 on the young season, and the Buccaneers have scored eight unanswered goals. The 2022 Pirates did not log their second road win until their Oct. 15 regular-season finale, and they didn't score their eighth road goal until that same match.

The Maroon & White are scheduled to be at home for their next contest. The Double-R will host Lake Catholic Saturday at Rocky River Stadium (3 p.m. kickoff).
