Gr(Eight) start! Pirates sink Titans 8-0 in bracket opener

RR Girls Soccer

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (Oct. 20, 2022) -- Rocky River cruised to an 8-0 conquest in an Elyria 2 District Tournament quarterfinal versus Berea-Midpark Thursday.

The Pirates (15-1-1) -- winners of 11 straight matches -- got three goals from sophomore Sophia Sindelar and a pair of goals and four assists from junior Ava Patti in propelling the squad to its 11th shutout win of the season. Superior possession skills led to a one-sided affair, and the visiting Titans were unable to manage even a shot in the October bracket tussle.

Maeve Kelly, Annika Mocho, and Grace Quaiser rounded out the River scoring in an effort that saw the Pirates reel in more-than-three goals for a fifth straight contest. Mackenzie Russell, Mia Carney, Kelly (two), Ava Blair, Mocho, and Addison Russell joined Patti in being credited with assists. The goal for Quasier and the point for Russell marked career firsts.

With her four helpers, Patti became the first Double-R player since 2013 -- and the fourth player overall -- to register 20 assists in a single season. The junior talent now has 19 goals and 20 assists (58 points) in 2022. During the game, she passed Melissa Jones (153 points, 1988-89) and moved into fourth place on Rocky River's all-time points list. Patti (62G-33A--157P) is now tied with sister Maya (33A, 2017-20) in the career assists department.

In the twine-finder department, Sindlar became the fourth River player to register 30 goals in a season (she now has 31). The sophomore standout has scored a goal in eight straight matches. She has scored multiple goals in four straight.

Patti, Sindelar, and the 12th-ranked (Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association, DI) Pirates will play a district semifinal against North Royalton on Monday (6 p.m., Rocky River Stadium).
