Pirate haul includes third, fifth at Mentor meet

RR Boys Cross Country

MENTOR, Ohio (Sept. 3, 2022) -- Rocky River clocked in with a pair of top-5 finishes at the 50th Annual Mentor Cardinal Classic Saturday. The River boys placed third and the Pirate girls took fifth in the large-field event at Garfield Park. [results]

Luke Dorenkott (seventh place) and Majid Abuaun (eighth) paced the boys squad. All five scoring runners earned top-60 finishes en route to the team scoring 142 points. That tally was bested by only Chardon (89 points) and champion Medina (53) in a talented field of 25 teams and 199 runners. The Pirates' five scoring runners were Dorenkott, Abuaun, Ruairi Zuercher (20th), Ethan Hazra (50th), and Ben Buehrle (57th).

Brianna Chaves placed sixth to lead the Double-R effort on the girls' side. Chaves was joined by Katie Stirm (29th), Jane Rathbun (30th), Grace Lavelle (31st), and Allie Dewey (32nd) in River posting a score of of 128. The girls' competition was comprised of 23 teams and 188 runners.

Medina (74 points) won the girls race to sweep the meet, as Rocky River's season rolled into September.
