River pitching rocks Bay in one-hit shutout

RR Baseball

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio -- Rocky River earned a 4-0 Great Lakes Conference West Division victory over the Bay Rockets Saturday. Thomas Rossi (two innings pitched), Josh Mommers (4 IP), and Braedon Spies (1 IP)combined on a masterful one-hit shutout, as the Pirates snapped a seven-game losing streak.

The Maroon & White had yielded 32 runs over their previous three games, but Messrs. Rossi, Mommers, and Spies were a veritable brick wall sealing off the bottom half of the line score. Rossi worked out of a jam in the Bay first. Mommers retired the first batter of all four of his innings and would work around just one walk and one River error. Spies pitched a 1-2-3 seventh with a pair of strikeouts.

On offense, the Pirates (5-9, 2-4 GLC West) got solo runs in the second and third innings. River's first run was one of the manufactured variety, scored off a Gavin O'Brien single, a stolen base, a ground out, and a wild pitch. In the third, Anthony Ferchill tripled and then stole home. Another triple -- O'Brien's second hit of the afternoon -- loomed large in a two-run Rocky River sixth.

Mommers and Spies combined to retire the last seven Bay batters.

The 4-0 win marked a measure of retribution in the baseball version of the War by the Shore. Bay had beaten the Pirates 18-13 on Friday.
