Shore enough: Holton sparks valley victory over Avon Lake

RR Girls Golf

CLEVELAND (Aug. 17) -- Junior Chloe Holton fired the best 9-hole score by a River player this season, helping Rocky River squeak by Avon Lake 168-169 Wednesday. Holton was just 1-over across her last six holes and carded a 4-over 38 as the Pirates (4-0) triumphed in a home match at Little Met Golf Course.

Scoring for the home side on a beautiful day in the valley were Holton, Mia Ginnetti (42), Julia Schmid (44), and Nora Sheridan (44). The Shoregals countered with a 40-40-44-45--169. Olivia Tobin and Ava Lamb tallied the 40s on the Avon Lake card.

Holton was not the only River golfer hitting clutch shots late in the non-conference round at the 2,195-year, par-34 layout. Mia Ginnetti started her day double-bogey-triple-bogey on holes 1 and 2. She rallied to fire her 8-over 42, and that rally included a par-par-birdie finish on 7, 8, and 9. The sophomore linkster has now carded four straight nines between 42-44. Through Wednesday, Ginnetti owns a fine 9-hole stroke average of 42.9.

Chloe Holton's round also included a birdie. She recorded a 2 on the 110-yard, par-3 seventh. Holton played Little Met's trio of par-3s in even-par. The junior has been Rocky River's low score in three straight events, and she owns an overall stroke average of 41.
