RR Volleyball

AVON LAKE, Ohio (Oct. 1, 2022) -- Rocky River competed in the First Annual Avon Lake Shoregals Tournament Saturday. The Pirates went 1-2 across matches against Avon Lake (lost 2-0: 21-25,22-25), Wadsworth (won 2-1: 25-21,18-25,25-15), and Kenston (lost 2-0: 13-25,24-26). The Double-R took sixth place in a field of eight teams.

The Pirates (11-4) hit a robust .333 while collecting six blocks against the host Shoregals. River had nine aces, five blocks, and 57 digs against 21 dig errors in a defense-dominated match against Wadsworth. The Maroon & White were undone by 16 hitting errors against Kenston.

"We hung with some tough teams today," said coach Brittany Morris. "T thought the girls got better throughout the day, and I really liked how our defense looked. That competition makes our girls tougher in the back row. That mentality of 'nothing hits the floor' is something we showed today."

Rocky River's losses were against Avon Lake and Kenston squads that are now 14-5 on the season. The Shoregals went 3-0 Saturday and were the tournament champions.

The River Raiders' statistical leaders were Ella Brokaw (13 kills, seven total blocks), Madie Shoaf (12 kills, six total blocks), Kylie Spies (28 assists, five aces, 27 digs), and Samantha Young (23 kills, 32 digs, seven total blocks).

Young, who logged her 800th career kill in the match against Avon Lake, was named to the event's all-tournament team.
