"Sophia" comes up big in Name game as Pirates win, 6-0

RR Girls' Soccer

PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Rocky River closed out its regular season with a 6-0 victory over Holy Name on Saturday. The matchup between GLC West runner-up RRHS and GLC East runner-up HNHS was part of Saturday's Great Lakes Conference Crossover Challenge.

A pair of Sophias led the way as the No. 8 (Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association DII) Pirates earned their seventh consecutive shutout. Freshman Sophia Sindelar notched three goals, and senior Sophia Murray had two goals and an assist. The win marked River's seventh straight in road games.

Rocky River (14-2) got three goals from Sindelar -- her fifth, sixth, and seventh of the season, two from Murray, and one from Maeve Kelly, whose lone netfinder marked a team-leading 15th of the season. Assists were registered by Murray, Ava Patti (two) and Addie Harris. The Pirates tallied one goal in the opening half and five in the second stanza.

The victory effectively closes out the GLC slate with the Pirates placing third, behind West champion Bay and East champ Buckeye. The Rockets defeated the Bucks, 2-0, in Saturday's circuit title match.

River's seven straight shutouts mark the program's second-longest. The 2010 squad had nine in a row (8-0-1 record from Sept. 1-29). Rocky River has allowed just 10 goals this fall and 22 goals over its last 38 games.

The Pirates will now prepare for district tournament play. On Oct. 21 at 6 p.m., Rocky River will host the winner of Keystone-Fairview in the DII Region 6 Elyria bracket.
