River plunders gold, silver at GLC Preview

MEDINA, Ohio -- Rocky River competed in the Great Lakes Conference Preview Saturday morning. [results: B individual, team | G individual, team]

The River boys' team clocked three top-10 finishes en route to scoring a first-place 44 points in the 10-team gathering of circuit rivals. The Pirates bested Bay (71 points) and Westlake (86) for the top spot on a hot day at Buckeye High School.

The Double-R girls' team took second-place in the event. River tallied 36 points, finishing just behind newly-minted GLC member Westlake (29) in a 10-team field.

Junior Greg Ganor (third) and sophomores Ruairi Zuercher (sixth) and Grant Preto (seventh) were the boys' top runners in the meet. Ganor finished the 5k in 17:14.7. Bay's Michael Muccio won the race when he crossed the wire at 16:53.1.

Senior Samantha Coleman (third) was Rocky River's top finisher in a girls' top-10 dominated by the Demons and Pirates. Freshman Katie Stirm announced her GLC presence with authority, carding a fifth-place finish. Sophomore Brianna Chaves and freshman Jane Rathbun took sixth and ninth, respectively. River and Westlake accounted for eight of the 10 fastest times. Westlake junior Sydney Peer bolted to a final time of 18:11.9, some 72 seconds ahead of her nearest pursuer.
