Double-R Racket Report 8/29: River drops two in hot, humid week of court action

RR Girls' Tennis

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- Despite a Wednesday rainout against Great Lakes Conference foe Fairview, Rocky River competed twice during the week ending Aug. 29. The Pirates dropped a 4-1 match to Bay on Monday. They lost to Hudson, 5-0, on Thursday.

Two-time defending GLC Most Valuable Player Samantha Robertson won River's lone match against the Rockets. In doubles play, the junior-junior duo of Matilda Green and Gigi Konrad gave a game effort in a 6-4, 6-2 loss.

Robertson suffered a hard-fought 6-2, 6-4 setback in her test against Hudson. Against the talented Explorers, Robertson and the doubles team of Scout Hahn and Hannah Burgess were especially impressive in battling in long matches on a sweltering 90-degree afternoon. Hahn and Burgess were felled, 7-5, 6-3.

"I appreciate the fight our girls put up today, said first-year head coach Eric Hillstrom. "The conditions were tough; Hudson is especially tough. This will serve us well down the line."

That down the line for the Pirates (0-7, 0-3 GLC) includes three matches the week of Aug. 30.

CANNON FIRE ...

QUICK SIXES:
With her 1-1 week, Robertson is 5-2 on the season. Four of the junior's five wins have been of the 6-0, 6-0 variety.

NET GAINS: Varsity-B player Sydney Hocking made it to the finals of the Varsity B Championships tournament played at Avon Lake Saturday.
