Rangers rope Cup with 1-0 win over Pirates

Riverwood Cup

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Rocky River dropped a 1-0 contest to Lakewood in Wednesday night Great Lakes Conference crossover action.

The Pirates handed over the Riverwood Cup after the match. The victory was the Rangers' fourth in the seven-year Cup history (2015-present). Two of those four came via penalty shootouts (2016-17). The Pirates won last year's game, 4-0, and now three straight series matches have been shutouts. Lakewood defeated Rocky River, 1-0, in 2019.

"Congrats to the Rangers on taking the Riverwood Cup," said head coach Kevin Zerbey. "I'm proud of the way our guys played. They didn’t quit, so we can’t fault the effort. Now we recover, regroup, and refocus for a trip to Benedictine on Saturday."

Wednesday's loss marked the first setback of the season for the Pirates (3-1-2). All six River games have involved a shutout.

Rocky River and Lakewood met 20 times before the 2015 creation of the Riverwood Cup. In a series that dates back to 1975, the Pirates are 18-6-3.
