ROCKY RIVER, Ohio – Rocky River yielded its first goal since Aug. 26, but the Pirates kept an unbeaten streak alive with a 1-1 draw against Bay on Wednesday.
The Maroon & White got an early goal on a Bay miscue. The Pirates would yield a goal – their first in five games – in the 23rd
minute. The remaining minutes were a scoreless exchange between two solid Great
Lakes Conference foes who have now split three matches, 1-1-1 with each team
scoring two goals, over the last two seasons (2018-19).
Rocky River (4-1-1, 3-0-1 GLC) took a 1-0 lead in the eighth
minute on an alert and athletic play by sophomore Taylor Byall. Byall hustled
over to intercept an outlet pass coming out of the Bay zone, some 45 yards out
from the Rocket goal. She sent the ball into the right corner, and it was
centered by a Bay defender in an apparent miscommunication with the Rocket
netminder. The ball bounded to a wide-open Sophia Murray, who poked it over the
goal line for a 1-0 River lead.
Bay (2-2-1, 2-0-1) answered with a Kealy Sullivan goal in
the 23rd minute.
Sullivan’s twine-finder would cap the scoring at 1-1. And when all is said and done in the GLC standings this fall, Wednesday’s tie will be a glass either half-empty or half-full.
