Buckeye Waters sink Pirates, 2-0

MEDINA, Ohio – The Pirates had a three-game unbeaten streak snapped on Wednesday night, as Rocky River fell to Buckeye, 2-0.

Rocky River’s first loss since Aug. 19 also marked the squad’s first Great Lakes Conference loss since Oct. 12, 2016 – a stretch of 13 matches.

The host Bucks got two goals from Jack Waters en route to dispensing River’s second scoreless effort this season (Aug. 22 at Hawken). Senior goalkeeper Connor O’Toole was credited with eight saves in the loss.

Rocky River (3-2-1, 1-1 GLC) will host Valley Forge Saturday at 7 p.m. That match against the Patriots will be the third in a six-game stretch that has the Pirates getting through the bulk of its 2019 GLC slate in short order.

SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREAK: Rocky River's 13-match GLC unbeaten streak began with a monster 5-0 win over the rival Bay Rockets on Aug. 30, 2017. The Rockets had dealt the PIrates one of four Great Lakes Conference losses in 2016 (3-0 on Oct. 12, 2016). The 2017 season saw the Men in Maroon go 6-0 in circuit play. The Pirates would go 5-0-1 -- with a tie against Bay -- in 2018. And they had garnered one GLC win in as many games thus far in 2019. ... Over the 13 games since the 2016 loss to Bay, Rocky River outscored GLC foes, 60-4.

JV MATCH: River dropped Wednesday's junior varsity game at Buckeye, 5-0. The Pirates were held to one shot in the shutout loss. Freshman 'keeper Will DeClerck was credited with seven saves.
