MENTOR, Ohio – The host Cougars pulled off a comeback in an early-season east-west battle, as Lake Catholic defeated Rocky River, 2-1, on Monday.
For Lake Catholic, the contest marked a successful reprisal: the Cougars lost at Rocky River – by the same 2-1 score – a year ago (Aug. 22, 2018). The Pirates would go on to win 10 games and make it as far as the DII district finals. Lake went on to post a 13-6-1 record with one of its six losses being in a DII state semifinal match.
Senior Lizzie Hamker scored the opening goal of what marked
the lid-lifter to the Rocky River season. (The Pirates had a home match nixed
due to inclement weather last Monday.) But the 16th of Hamker’s career wouldn’t hold up on the scoreboard. The Cougars (3-0) tied the game on a netfinder by Kennedy Rieple and then won it on a goal by Ella Hadley.
With the setback in Mentor, Rocky River (0-1) is now 8-2-1
over its last 11 season openers.
