Pirates card narrow win over Westlake

RR Girls' Golf

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio – Friday’s victory for Rocky River Girls’ Golf was in the cards. The Pirates downed the Westlake Demons in a scorecard playoff after the two sides battled to a 200-200 on-course tie in non-conference action at Big Met Golf Course.

Rocky River won the playoff on the efforts of sophomore Kate McKeown who was tabbed as River’s No. 1 in Friday’s lineup. The format of the scorecard playoff calls for going to the most difficult hole contested (using USGA handicapping), going player-by-player, comparing scores on that hole. For Friday’s match, that spelled a reference to the 371-yard, par-4 ninth. McKeown bested her opposite, 5 to 6, on the ninth, earning River the win.

The bogey on nine was part of a fine finish for McKeown. A versatile athlete who also plays basketball for Rocky River, the sophomore linkster carded pars on No. 7 and No. 8. McKeown had four pars overall and led the squad with a 44 on the 2,735-yard front nine at Big Met.

River’s other three counting scores were logged by Lexi Aguilar (49), Ciara Grieve (53) and Sarah Farling (54).

For those three and McKeown, it wasn’t just their scores that counted in a 200-200 tie-swung-victory. It was every stroke.

CANNON FIRE …

LEAGUE PLAY UNDERWAY: On Wednesday, the Pirates opened Lake Erie Girls Golf Association play with a 201-234 victory over Keystone. The Maroon & White were paced by McKeown (43), Grieve (50), and Maggie Rodgers (51). The match was held at Grey Hawk Golf Club in Lagrange, Ohio.

ON DECK: Rocky River is slated to return to LEGGA play on Tuesday, when they host Columbia at Big Met (4 p.m.).
