Streak snapped

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio – Rocky River saw its three-game win streak snapped on Saturday, as the Pirates fell to Strongsville, 10-6.

The Pirates (7-3) and Mustangs (7-3) traded goals over the first 30 minutes of play, but the home side broke out over the final quarter-and-a-half. Strongsville busted a 5-5 tie late in the third quarter and went on to score 4-of-the-last-5 goals in the contest. The win for the Mustangs marked their first against River in three tries.

Senior attackman Aaron Kosmerl scored three goals for the Pirates. Rocky River’s other goals were added by Brian Hollis, Nolan Weaver and Michael Snow.

The game was a clash in styles and pace of play. Strongsville went into Saturday’s contest ranked fourth in the state (DI) in scoring, at 14.1 goals per game. Rocky River went into Saturday’s action ranked third in Ohio (DII) in defense, allowing a mere 4.4 goals per contest.


YOUNGSTERS THROWN BY MUSTANGS: River’s JV squad picked up its third loss of the 2017 season, falling 9-6 in what was a see-saw battle with Strongsville. The host Mustangs busted out of a 5-5 tie game by scoring four of the game’s final five goals down the stretch. The Pirates (6-3) were led by freshman midfielder Andrew Snow, who tallied three goals, two assists and seven ground balls.

MAX EFFORT: Junior Max Kovesdy had a big game on the defensive side of the field. Kovesdy registered five caused turnovers and five ground balls. Senior defenseman Titus Snavely added four caused turnovers. Those River long poles contributed to a plus-3 in turnover margin for the Pirates.

HOT HAND: Aaron Kosmerl has now tallied 10 goals over the Pirates’ last three games. Kosmerl took eight shots and put five on target Saturday. He has scored a team-high 20 goals on the year.
