RRMS DI Team Earns First Place

At the State Competition on April 7th, RRMS Destination Imagination team Magna Virtue placed 1st out of 8 teams at the middle level level in the technical event "Show & Tech." The small but mighty team consists of two siblings: 6th grader Hugo Stickney and 4th grader Beatrix Stickney.

The team will move on to Global Finals in Knoxville, TN in May where they will compete against teams from the US and 15 other countries. The global event brings together 17,000 competitors, appraisers, and spectators and is sponsored by companies such as 3M, Disney and Motorola. Team Magna Virtue will be the first Rocky River team to compete at the global level.

In the "Show & Tech" challenge, the team was asked to design and build a stage that moved a team member from one place to another. They also had to have an opening act and headliner act, two amazing special effects, and two team choice elements that reflected their talents and interests. All of these items had to be designed, scripted, built, and executed without the advice or help of any non-team member. At the competition, the team had up to 8 minutes to present their solution. The team chose as a theme for their solution: the game of chess.

The team also competed in an instant challenge where they creatively solved a problem in a very short period of time.

This is Hugo's third year competing and Beatrix's second. Destination Imagination is a worldwide competition designed to teach students the creative process and empower them with the skills needed to succeed in an ever-changing world. Meredith Muccio, the Elementary and Intermediate Gifted Coordinator, has headed this program in the Rocky River City School District for eight years.
