Game-set-match: Pirates drop Warriors in three to close out regular season

RR Volleyball

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- Rocky River closed out is 2020 regular season with a 3-0 home-court win over Fairview on Thursday evening.

The Pirates faltered a bit over the front half of the second stanza but then righted the ship to close out the event in straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-6). Rocky River (14-7, 13-5 GLC) will now cast an eye toward postseason play and figures to head into DII Northeast Ohio District Tournament brackets with some decent confidence: with Thursday's win, the Pirates have won seven of their last eight matches.

In the most recent conquest on that run, the Maroon & White swatted their way to a .204 average at the net. Paige Waite (nine kills) and Samantha Young (eight kills, .428 hitting) were the Pirate leaders up front.

The back line was paced by the fine play of Taylor Spies who logged 12 digs against just one error. Spies also clocked three assists and a pair of service aces. As a team, Rocky River had 13 aces on the night, and that's part of a trend: the Wagar Road Buccaneers have registered 59 aces over their last three matches.

Clare Duffy posted a versatile line in the final box score, contributing four kills against no hitting errors. Duffy also logged three aces and five digs.

With Thursday's victory, the Pirates swept their two-match season series with their neighbor from two-and-a-half miles down the road. And to the victors go the spoils: the name of that road is Wagar. Not 210.
