A silver & gold start for Pirate runners

RR Boys' Cross Country

BAY VILLAGE, Ohio -- Rocky River's Boys' and Girls' Cross Country teams opened their 2020 season Saturday at Cahoon Park in Bay Village. The Pirate boys took second place and the River girls took first in what was a tri-meet against the Bay Rockets and Lakewood Rangers. (Results: Boys | Girls)
 
On the boys’ side, the host Rockets won the event, taking four of the top five places and posting a team score of 21 points. The Pirates placed second, notching 38 points. Individually, senior Luke Kishna placed third with a final time of 10:38.4 in the 3.2k race. River’s other four scorers were senior Seth Williams (sixth), sophomore Luke Dorenkott (seventh), junior Sam Buehrle (eighth), and sophomore Greg Ganor (14th).
 
In the girls’ competition, Rocky River carded the first three places en route to a 26-point morning on the lakeside course. All five scorers would log top-15 times in the overall field of 69 athletes. Two-time Great Lakes Conference champion and two-time state qualifier Sam Coleman led the way for the Maroon & White. The junior speedster took first place overall, clocking in with a time (12:25) nearly 20 seconds ahead of the runner-up which was teammate Brianna Chaves.
 
Chaves and fellow freshman Carolyn Wanosik took second and third, respectively. River’s fourth and fifth scorers were senior Alison Ritvo (seventh) and junior Saraa Abuzarieh (13th).
 
In all, a dozen Pirate underclassmen Pirate (seven girls, five boys) logged top-25 times in the season-opening event.
