Bid for six nixed by Bay

RR Girls' Tennis

PARMA, Ohio -- Rocky River had its run of consecutive Great Lakes Conference titles snapped at the GLC Championship Tournament Wednesday afternoon.

The Bay Rockets rode wins in second and third singles and first doubles to victory. The Rockets' win snaps a five-year run of circuit titles for the Pirates.

The Pirates' performance -- a runner-up finish as a team -- was highlighted by sophomore Samantha Robertson who for a second year in a row won league MVP honors. Robertson won first singles, going 2-0 and lifting her season mark to 17-2. River also won in second doubles with Scout Hahn and Hannah Burgess making their way through the brackets unscathed. Hahn and Burgess are now 6-12 on the season.

Becca Krebs (second singles), Makenzie Runyon (third singles), and the Pirate duo in first doubles (Caitlin Kelly, Maire Kate Hickey) all advanced to the finals on Wednesday.

"I'm proud of the girls," said Head Coach JoHanna Forman. "They fought hard for points and supported each other out there. We lost to a talented Bay team that beat us, 4-1, earlier this fall. The way our players battled today shows a lot of progress and heart."

The tournament was held at Veterans Memorial Park.
